Operation Last Exodus is a work of fiction. Still, that doesn’t mean it could not or will not happen.
The spark for this book came to me thirty years ago, and the story has burned within my heart and soul through those years. I read The Source by James Michener in which he chronicles a thousand year period of the history of Israel.
In the final chapter, several of Michener’s characters discuss a long debated issue among Jews everywhere. They clash over Jewish emigration and the question: Where do Jews belong? An Israeli military officer argues that all Jews belong in Israel. The American counters that Jews in the U.S. are safe. Two oceans, a history of tolerance, and respect for Jews provide security n America. The U.S. Jews work and raise funds to support and visit Israel, but they live in America.
The argument ping-pongs back and forth until the conflict is clear and developed. Then near the chapter’s end, the Israeli notes recent attacks on synagogues in Florida. He says that the attacks have made Israel consider the insertion of agents into Florida to defend Jews living there.
Wow! Really? Michener had introduced the thought of Israeli intervention on American soil in defense of Jews here – fifty five years ago. That spark ignited a fire in me that has intensified over the years with each day’s news at home and abroad.
Since that time until today, I’ve asked myself, could it happen here? I know that the thought of a holocaust in America seems impossible to most American Jews (or Jewish Americans). Yet, my knowledge of history and cautious thoughts keep me close to current affairs and ancient prophecies.
The fact is that prophecies throughout the Tenach describe a time when dispersed Jews would be gathered back to Israel. Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, and other prophets foresaw and wrote of such a time. By choice? By force?
I wonder, why would Jews in America leave job, home, family, and familiar settings and perceived safety to live in Israel? Would they exchange safety for insecurity?
This story is about another Jewish holocaust – just ahead in America’s near future. It’s about how current and yet-to-come events force American Jews to make a decision.
Stay in America at great risk to themselves and family? Or emigrate to Israel. Also a risky decision.
Operation Last Exodus is about how hope and help arrive. It revisits Jewish historical events and patterns in light of current and growing trends. And it connects the dots and predictable patterns in a modern day context.
Could another holocaust happen here? Does history repeat itself? The Jewish calendar has event each year – reminders that enemies often sought our annihilation. Yet Jewish preservation endures. Tish B’Av, Purim, Yom Ha Shoah to Chanukah, and others tell us every year that our people have faced suffering, cruelty, threats, pogroms, and true evil from malevolent people and powers.
So, now, you may wonder and ask yourself, could another holocaust happen here?
My answer… don’t ask me… ask the six million from Europe who never believed it could happen there.
